Our History
First 10 Years of BRPCC
2002
In August the Healthcare for the Homeless Advisory Group formed by Ann Clark-Whitlock, FNP
2003
BRPCC formed after the St. Vincent DePaul Society (SVDP) studied the need for healthcare for the homeless following a statewide health care summit. SVDP, Earl K. Long Medical Center and the Mays Foundation joined to form Baton Rouge Primary Care Collaborative, Inc.
SVDP was awarded $150,000 from Louisiana Bureau of Primary Care and Rural Health to develop a Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) and a Community Health Center (CHC) as part of an initiative to support the development and expansion primary and preventive health care access. The grant covered the costs of consultants, technical assistance and legal expenses associated with the compilation and submission of a federal grant application, the development of a business plan, minor capital improvements and medical and office equipment for the two facilities located at 1414 Fairchild and 220 SVD Place.
A community forum was held to obtain community input for development of the sites. A volunteer Board of Directors was formed and Articles of Incorporation were created and filed RS 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Non Profit Corporation status was secured and a Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) 330 Grant Application was submitted.
2004
BRPCC secured $650,000 from HRSA to open two Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCS) in the Greater Baton Rouge area.
The opening of BRPCC demonstrates the value of collaboration and partners The result is an effort that involved several huge resources of the community including doctors, nonprofit groups and the many levels of comment “These clinics were said to be a GODSEND for thousands of our families who need and deserve better primary care." (Kathleen Blanco, former Governor of Louisiana
2010
The 1414 Fairchild Street CHC site was temporarily moved to the Surgical Hospital on Howell Place while renovations for a move into the Jewel Newman Community Center were underway.
2011
The HCH site moves to 153 N. 17 Street (the new site of the Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless) The CHC site moves to 2013 Central Road, Suite B (in the Jewel Newman Community Center)
